Off to the Wanderlust World Guide Awards

Tonight the Royal Geographical Society plays host to the Wanderlust World Guide Awards.  I’m heading up there to meet up with some of the members of the Itinerant Writers Club and to share a celebratory glass of wine with Lyn Hughes and the Wanderlust team.  There are four finalists, but as one is from Peru the other three are going to have to fight for my support!  See more here:

Nominations are already open for next year’s awards, so if you’ve been anywhere this year with a guide that went above and beyond the job description, you can give them the recognition they deserve using this online form:

I’m thinking that the guide that helped me over a rough track to see Karajia’s amazing cliff-mounted sarcophagi might have my vote.  Thanks amigo!

The winner is… Efrain Valles.  This Peruvian guide was a worthy winner in my book and responsible for the best quote of the night.  With typically Peruvian humour, when asked how he got groups to bond effectively on a tour, he replied: “I just tell them that the one on their own will be the sacrifice!”  I had the privilege of meeting him, and the charming Bronze award winner Lewis Mangaba, at the event’s after party and if I ever need a guide in Peru or Tanzania, these men will be the first I contact.
